Teeth Whitening Questions
Beverly Hills & Los Angeles, California
What tooth whitening choices do I have?
There are different ways to whiten and brighten your teeth. The two main choices are at-home tooth whitening and in-office professional teeth whitening in a cosmetic dentistry office. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Kevin B. Sands has professionally whitened the teeth of thousands of patients in and around Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, California.
What is Chair-Side bleaching?
Dr. Sands will clean your teeth surfaces with a pumice-like material to remove plaque. Then a peroxide-based gel is applied. Most gels are self-activating; others are activated by the use of a special light. The light itself does not whiten your teeth. It only activates the bleaching gel and speeds the process along.
What actually does the whitening is oxygen, which is released into the tooth enamel by the whitening agent. The oxygen breaks up stain molecules into shorter molecules which do not create any discoloration in your teeth’s appearance.
Is tooth whitening safe?
Research indicates that tooth whitening makes no changes to the surface of the teeth when 10% bleaching solution is used. There is no damage to the teeth whatsoever.
What are the side effects of teeth whitening?
Bleaching gels can cause some tooth sensitivity, which may give you mild discomfort. Some brands of bleaching gel contain desensitizing agents that claim to alleviate post-bleaching sensitivity. Using a desensitizing toothpaste like Sensodyne will also help minimize discomfort.
How long do the tooth whitening results last?
Immediately after bleaching, the color of your teeth will typically fade a little and then stabilize for approximately six months to a year. For maintenance purposes, it is recommended that you touch up your smile every four to six months.
Will teeth whitening make my porcelain veneers whiter?
No. Bleaching agents used to whiten teeth work only on tooth enamel. This means that all dental work including bonding, veneers, crowns and bridges will remain the same shade. For this reason, tooth whitening should be done before any needed dental restorations so that Dr. Sands can match your restorations to your bright new shade of white.
