Several types of sedation dentistry are in common use today, so patients have more choices than ever. Nitrous oxide gas and oral sedation dentistry are two common methods of relieving patient anxiety and fear in the dental chair. Another common, but less understood route for administration is IV sedation dentistry

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Just the name laughing gas should lift your spirits. Nitrous oxide has long been used to alleviate anxiety for dental patients. Dr. Sands places a little mask on your nose and delivers the nitrous oxide gas in a low flow that puts you on the edge of awake and oblivious. Just low enough to keep you from laughing.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

When Dr. Sands determines that oral sedation dentistry is best for you, he will give you some pills to take just before you come in for your appointment. Because these make you drowsy before you even get to the office, you will have to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment. You shouldn’t drive for the rest of that day. Oral sedation lasts longer than nitrous oxide, but is very effective in relaxing you and eliminating any fears you might have had.

IV Sedation Dentistry

Like oral sedation, you can expect complete relief from anxiety and fear with IV sedation dentistry. And like oral sedation, you may feel drowsy longer than with nitrous oxide. For that reason, you should plan to have someone drive you home following your dental appointment.

IV sedation is administered through a needle placed intravenously–in a vein in your arm or hand. The medication drips down a tube and can be adjusted to keep you as alert or drowsy as needed to be most effective.

Regardless of the type of sedation dentistry you receive, they all offer freedom from anxiety making your trip to the dentist a pleasant experience.
