Porcelain crowns give a tooth new surfaces on all sides, and a new life. They are similar to porcelain veneers in that they both are made from pearly white dental porcelain. And both look so much like your natural teeth that nobody could tell you had any dental work done. But veneers cover only the front surface of teeth, and are used only on front teeth.
Crowns are used on any tooth which still has a healthy root, but which is so damaged or decayed that it cannot survive by itself. On back teeth, they provide a strong, new chewing surface. Gold crowns are still used by many dentists, but we like to offer porcelain crowns which look more attractive, since they match your natural teeth so closely.
Large-scale defects in a tooth's surface can be caused by tooth grinding, which wears down the enamel, and by anything that allows decay to enter the tooth - chips or cracks in the enamel, a loose filling or a lost filling. Good dental hygiene - brushing and flossing your teeth at least once each day - is the best way to guard against tooth decay. Without that daily care, the bacteria in the mouth will multiply and spread, putting their toxic excretions on teeth and gums. The acidity of those excretions eats into tooth enamel, destroying it.
A porcelain crown gives you basically a new tooth, with new surfaces, a new lease on life, and if necessary, a slightly new shape if the old shape caused any disharmony in your bite.
