1. What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign ® is the new way to invisibly straighten teeth, without uncomfortable and unattractive braces. Using a series of completely clear and removable aligners in differing sizes, your teeth are gradually straightened. Invisalign is FDA approved and has been proven effective in clinical research and in practices nationwide.
- Overly crowded teeth
- Widely spaced teeth
2. What are the benefits of Invisalign ®?
- No unsightly braces--aligners are completely transparent and difficult to detect
- Removable--eating, brushing and flossing are no problem
- Far more comfortable than braces
3. How does Invisalign ® work?
The process begins with cosmetic dentist Dr. Sands making a detailed impression of your teeth, which is used to create a highly accurate, 3D teeth-model. Computer animation is then used to depict the movement of your teeth from the beginning of treatment, when your teeth are most widely spaced, to the end of treatment, when your teeth are perfectly aligned. Based on the computer animated data, a series of clear aligners are created in differing sizes. When you wear the aligners, they function just like braces, using pressure to gently guide your teeth into proper alignment.
4. How long does Invisalign ® take to work?
About every two weeks, you will replace your aligner with a new, slightly-smaller custom aligner. Just like traditional metal braces, gradually your teeth become straight. You will need to wear the aligners for 9 to 18 months before your teeth are completely straight. Keep in mind that the average treatment time is less than a year, the same time period as traditional braces.
5. How often do I have to wear the aligners?
To receive the greatest benefit from treatment, and see a difference as quickly as possible, you should wear the aligners at all times. You can take the aligners out to apart eat, brush your teeth, or floss, but need to remember to put them back in when you are finished. At a minimum, the aligners should be worn for 22 hours a day to be entirely effective.
6. Are there any food restrictions?
No. Since Invisalign ® are removable, your diet is not restricted at all. It is important to note that using tobacco products is discouraged because it can stain the aligners, eventually making them visible.
7. Do I have to do anything once treatment is complete?
To protect your new smile, after the 9-18 month period is complete you will wear a thicker version of the aligner once every two to four weeks.
8. Is Invisalign ® right for me?
Successful Invisalign ® treatment depends on how often you wear the aligners, so you should consider this when deciding if Invisalign ® is right for you. After eating you need to clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in your mouth. If you tend to be a little forgetful, or think you might not clean your teeth as often as necessary, Invisalign ® may not be for you. Also consider the time commitment of Invisalign ® (9-18 months) -- are you willing to invest the time necessary for straight teeth with Invisalign ®?
If you are unsatisfied with the current alignment of your teeth, but have been hesitant to wear traditional braces due to an unflattering look, Invisalign ® is most likely the answer you've been looking for.
