Beverly Hills & Los Angeles, California
Most people dread the thought of some day requiring dentures. No one wants to need them, but no one wants to be without any teeth, either. Fortunately, today’s cosmetic dentistry offers a nice variety of restorative dentistry solutions, many of which were just futuristic dreams a short time ago. Dr. Kevin Sands is known for his porcelain veneers work and other cosmetic procedures, making him the perfect fit for finding the right denture solution for you.
Today’s dentures are made comfortable materials that fit better than earlier types. Acrylic is a commonly used plastic for dentures.
Dentures can be complete upper or lower arches, or partials, to fill in spaces left by missing teeth. Dentures can also be used temporarily to maintain gums, tissue and spacing while bridges or implants are being prepared.
Partial dentures are removable, as are full dentures. Partials are made to replace one or more missing teeth. They attach to neighboring teeth with a clasp and are generally very stable when in place.
Implant Retained Dentures
Implant retained dentures, both full arches and partials, can be made either removable or bonded to the implanted teeth. Implant retained dentures used for a full lower arch are very effective in securing the denture for chewing and biting some of the foods considered awkward or impossible for conventional denture wearers.
Foods like corn on the cob and apples are easily managed when the lower arch is secured to an implanted tooth. Studies also show that when both arches are secured, the denture-wearer is able to chew food two to four times more thoroughly than with conventional dentures.
Between the time you have had your last tooth removed and the time you are ready to wear your new dentures, you will go through a period of healing. Your gums may be swollen or tender. Taking an impression for your final dentures at this time would leave you with loose-fitting dentures several months later. Temporary dentures are worn until all swelling is gone. After you have healed completely you are ready to have your dentures prepared.
Denture Preparation Procedure
Denture preparation is done over several office visits. Measurements and impressions need to be taken after all swelling and healing is resolved. Teeth and gum color need to be determined. Dr. Kevin Sands, Beverly Hills dentist, will match these to your complexion with a goal of achieving the most natural blending of tones possible. Overall fit for comfort and stability must be determined. Sometimes Dr. Sands needs to make a few final adjustments to your dentures to make them fit more comfortably.
It may take a few weeks to adjust to speaking and chewing with dentures in your mouth.
