Dental Bonding
Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica & Orange County

Dental bonding involves a procedure where a tooth-colored resin material (a highly durable plastic) is applied to the tooth and is hardened using a special light. It can be used to treat a number of different conditions.

Conditions in Which Dental Bonding Can Be Used
Dental bonding is an option that can be used, for cosmetic and health reasons, to:

  • Repair decayed teeth
  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Make teeth look longer
  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Replace amalgam fillings
  • Protect the root of a tooth when gums recede

The Advantages of Dental Bonding
One of the major advantages of dental bonding is that it is a relatively easy treatment. Since nothing has to be custom made, as it does with veneers and crowns, dental bonding can usually be done in a single office visit and little advance preparation is needed. Also, only a very small amount of enamel is removed from your tooth, which results in less tooth sensitivity than some other procedures, such as veneers. Unless you are undergoing dental bonding to fill a cavity, no anesthesia is needed.

Dental Bonding-The Procedure
After discussing your desired outcome with you, Dr. Sands roughens the surface of your tooth before applying a special liquid. The liquid will ensure a strong bond between the material and your tooth. Dr. Sands will then apply the tooth-colored resin and expertly mold it into the desired shape and position. A special light or laser is then used to harden the resin. Dr. Sands finishes by further shaping and polishing to match the sheen of the rest of your tooth. After just 30-60 minutes, the procedure is complete and your smile is dazzling.

Since dental bonding is not as strong as procedures such as crowns, veneers or fillings, and can chip, it's usually used on teeth that are not subject to a lot of pressure, such as the front teeth. Since the resin used in dental bonding can chip, it's important to refrain from any bad habits, such as biting on your fingernails or biting on pens. Also, chewing on ice and other food is to be avoided.

Approximately 3-10 years after undergoing dental bonding, Dr. Sands will need to do a touch up or a replacement.
