Anyone with a missing tooth (or teeth) can potentially be a candidate for dental implants. During a personal consultation, Dr. Sands and his team will determine whether or not dental implants are right for you. Generally speaking, the ideal dental implants candidate should:
- Be missing one or more teeth due to injury or decay
- Have enough bone density to support a dental implant
- Be free of gum disease
- Be in relatively strong oral health
If you have diabetes, your condition must be adequately controlled to make sure it does not interfere with the implant process. Uncontrolled diabetes can prevent proper bone growth, which can lead to implants loosening and falling out over time.
Additionally, if you are a smoker, you will need to quit before getting dental implants. Smoking can cause a host of problems with dental implants, including gum and tissue loss, periodontal disease, peri-implantitis (inflammation of tissue pockets around dental implants), and implant failure.
Dental implants have a 98% success rate when placed by an experienced dentist with a qualified candidate. If you have further questions or concerns about this procedure, please contact Kevin B. Sands, DDS today to schedule your initial consultation. We serve patients throughout Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, California.
